“How Deep Is the Ocean?” van Irving Berlin komt uit 1932.
“How Deep Is the Ocean?” is een populair lied van Irving Berlin, geschreven in 1932. Het ontstond uit een eerder nummer, “To My Mammy” (1930), waarin al de regels voorkwamen: “How deep is the ocean? / How high is the sky?”
Berlin schreef het lied in een moeilijke periode van zijn leven. Samen met “Say It Isn’t So” werd het een groot succes en betekende het zijn comeback.
De tekst begint met de vraag: “Hoeveel houd ik van jou?” Daarna volgen allerlei retorische vragen, zoals “Hoe diep is de oceaan?” en “Hoe hoog is de hemel?”, die allemaal hetzelfde uitdrukken: mijn liefde voor jou is onmetelijk groot.
