De hoofdpersoon lijkt vervreemd van zijn omgeving of wordt niet goed begrepen door zijn omgeving.
Of neem een van zijn, naar mijn bescheiden mening, beste nummers: ‘Maggie’s Farm’ (1965, ‘Bringing It All Back Home), waarin Dylan met een elektrische gitaar en passant ook afstand doet van zijn oude fans die in hem een folk-held wilde zien. Het nummer kun je op zoveel manieren interpreteren: een puberale opstand tegen de verwachtingen van zijn folk-fans, een aanklacht tegen de conservatieve Amerikaanse maatschappij , een aanklacht tegen racisme en machtsmisbruik… beluister het maar hieronder en oordeel zelf.
